Supported Employment

For more than 18 years, the Upstate Cerebral Palsy Supported Employment Program has been helping people attain their fullest potential as members of the community. This is accomplished through a collaborative effort with the Upstate Cerebral Palsy staff and the NYS Education Department to provide vocational services to individuals who are most significantly disabled.

The Upstate Cerebral Palsy Supported Employment Program staff works with people on evaluating, counseling, training and placement services to obtain a competitive job in the most appropriate employment setting. Like any employment situation, it is all about the right "match" - the right employee with the right employer. Upstate Cerebral Palsy staff spends time building relationships between the employee and the business to reach a "comfort level" for everyone involved. Even after the training is completed, the job coaches provide on going support for the people throughout the employment period. This service includes monitoring of the person’s work performance and continually assessing their employment stability.

Some of the employers that currently work with Upstate Cerebral Palsy are: Sears, Lowes, Walmart, Byrne Dairy, Pizza Hut, Target, Knights of Columbus, The Observer Dispatch, Turning Stone Casino, Colgate University, Garys’ Liquors, The Stonehedge and Burns Security.

Upstate Cerebral Palsy currently serves more than 55 people in its Supported Employment Program. Anyone who is interested in obtaining more information on the program can contact Rick Paulsen, Program Director at 737-9012.
